FAQ

About the Woods Services Foundation

Why does Woods need support?
Woods is a nonprofit, charitable organization. Philanthropic support is key to its health and vitality. Because tuition and fees cover only the cost of basic services, Woods must rely on gifts and grants for programs that improve the quality of life for its clients as they strive to reach their goals.

What do tuition and fees cover?
Tuition covers housing, educational or vocational services, clinical services, related therapy supports (Occupational, Physical, and Speech), routine medical/dental care, and recreation. It does not cover travel, medication, medical treatment beyond routine care, and miscellaneous expenses, such as haircuts, and clothing.

Woods' clients are supported by a variety of funding streams. More than 80% of Woods' fee-for-service business is derived from public funding sources. The majority of referrals come from school districts. Others are referred to Woods by child welfare agencies and other funding sources. The exception is Woods' brain injury program, which is largely funded by Medicaid and various insurance programs. Only 17% of clients are funded through private or trust related funds.

What is the role of the Woods Services Foundation?
The Foundation was established for the purpose of securing gifts and grants to assist, advance, and strengthen Woods' programs and services. The Foundation staff and Board of Trustees are actively involved in developing partnerships with benefactors, families, community resources, and various funding sources. In addition to Woods' Board of Trustees, a separate Woods Services Foundation Board, comprised of several trustees, advises the staff on issues affecting Woods' fundraising efforts.

Does the Foundation operate on a fiscal year?
Yes. Woods Services and the Woods Services Foundation operate on a July 1st through June 30th fiscal year. An independent audit is conducted at the conclusion of each fiscal year.

About The Campaign for Woods' Second Century

Who planned and organized this campaign?
Woods' approach to corporate planning is focused and comprehensive, with an emphasis upon accountability. Facilitated by senior management with input and approval from its Board of Trustees, Woods' Long Range Plan is reviewed, evaluated, and revised every three years. The plan is dynamic and identifies the organization's strengths and weaknesses, priorities, strategic direction, marketplace analysis, and plans of action.

One of Woods' primary objectives focuses on increasing efforts to secure gifts and grants to advance Woods' mission. In August 2005 the Trustees of Woods Services approved a strategy to maximize the effectiveness of Woods' fundraising efforts. After careful deliberation and the completion of a feasibility study, the Trustees unanimously agreed to proceed with a campaign to advance capital and endowment resources.

What are the goals of the campaign?
The Campaign has two goals:

  • Raise $2,500,000 for the construction of a new Medical, Dental and Employee Training Center. The new facility will advance the quality of health care services for Woods' clients and strengthen the employee training program.
  • Increase Woods' endowment resources to $50,000,000. To accomplish this, $7,500,000 is sought in philanthropic support. Doubling Woods' endowment will help ensure a secure future for the organization and those in its care.
  • Raise funds in support of the renovation of Pinewood, a residence for children and adolescents with autism.

What is an endowed gift?
Each gift designated as an endowment is a source of permanent financial support for Woods. Endowed gifts are invested and the principal is held in perpetuity. Only a percentage of funds earned on interest can be used annually for the purpose specified by the donor. It is one of the most lasting and meaningful ways to make a difference in the future of the organization.

How can I contribute to the campaign?
You can make your tax-deductible gift in cash, as well as through stocks, life insurance, trusts and gift annuities. Your contribution can be a single one-time gift, or spread out over a multi-year period. Woods Services can provide advice on planned gifts (bequests, charitable trusts, etc.) and help you learn more about the tax and income benefits to you and your family.

You can make a gift or pledge online at this website or you can contact the Development Office at (215) 750-4216.
